I have just been employed on my first assignment to work alongside a UK based specialist consulting firm to investigate money laundering – who (once again I get more kudos overseas than in my country). Who exactly pays my own employer? I have zero idea and I dont really care as they are letting me go after genuinely evil people where the intention is to secure a conviction and I get to pick my own cases.
Curiously the job offer came completely out of the blue a day after I got turned down for a similar role in the New Zealand Police’s own newly developed ‘freak squad’ (My slang Neurodivergent the PC name). A ‘situation vacant’ which I applied for on a lark and curiosity only to find yes I am also a little autistic and I smashed their aptitude test (I always knew I was a bit of a Rainman). So make of that what you will. I am stoked as this mean I can keep keeping you guys informed, do work (in which the confidentiality of my primary employer is assured) and go after some real scumbags and I get a cool job title thrown in for free all without worrying Im just being part of a global crack down on the little guys which I fear is still very much on the cards.
From the reader’s perspective this does not mean a lot. I am still also a journalist (to clarify my duel hat roles) but it did get me thinking about how I can improve what I do for you, my loyal band of brothers (and sisters) from another mother. Namely your subs mean dont be afraid to ask me questions or do a bit of digging this is in fact is the exclusive service I offer you. I mean dont ask me every day. Or expect me to write your book for you but yeah I can do my best to find about a company you’re wondering about or do a bit of in house fact checking for you as the need arises. ‘Mr Murka’ as an example usually consults me about once a month and that is the gold standard, something I am quite comfortable doing.
