BIO-WARFARE NZ

Kimer Med start-up announced in 2023 that it had achieved two 100% positive results in tests against the prolific Dengue and Zika viruses, spread by mosquitoes.

The Nelson pharma company is working to develop a drug to help fight Dengue fever and 15 different human viruses. The viruses were not named in press reports but their website list Zika Dengue Herpes Cowpox HIV as diseases they work on.

Reacting to social media reports that leaks from such a lab could be a catastrophe and could introduce tropical diseases into NZ, Kimer Chief Executive Rick Kiessig said the claims were inaccurate and misleading, and they spread “unnecessary fear and confusion”.  He stated the company was not creating viruses or vaccines, using mRNA technology, or doing anything related to the Gene Technology Bill, Kiessig said.

GENE TECH BILL 2025

The compounds the startup was creating were proteins, which were tested overseas.

The Gene Technology Bill, is a proposed law that would relax the current gene technology restrictions, making it easier to research genetic modification and propagate genetically modified organisms in New Zealand, past its first reading in parliament at the end of last year, with support from the governing parties. The bill relates to the definition of GMO which currently a defined by fairly stringent definition. Example the Covid vaccine included bio-engineered material, but the material was not “technically” a GMO even though a spokes for the Ministry of health acknowledge this was “splitting hairs” and by the definition most people perceive GMO would in fact yes be a GMO. Current delays in the law are being caused by such difficulty in pinning down what exactly constitutes GMO technology.

Public submissions on the new bill closed with more than 1,700 received. Dairy says GM bioscience could reduce carbon emissions. While research into bioengineering of damaged protein essential for learning and memory could prevent neurological disease such as Alzheimer’s. However watchdog groups and other scientist say we don’t know enough about long term impacts.

Researchers at Sydney’s Macquarie University say GMO can reduce insect pests such as Zika and Dengue carried by mosquitoes. Scientists called this method Toxic Male Technique (TMT), which used bioengineering to target the lifespan of female insects. “Pesticides face declining effectiveness due to resistance and may have caused harm to non-target species. The new control method works by genetically engineering males to produce venom proteins in their semen which when transferred to the female, reduces its lifespan and ability to spread disease.Rick Kiessig did not elaborate directly if any deadly pathogens were stored at the Kimer biolab.

I sent a series of question to the lab to seek clarification but after receiving a query asking who I was and “who my readers where” Kimer Lab public relations appear to have declined to answer my question

My questions to Kimer Lab in preparation of Shipping News August 48

Morning my name is Ben Vidgen

I’m a journalist and I am wondering if you might be able to clarify a few facts about your work at the Cawthorne Institute?

Namely

Are you working with actual Zika and Dengue pathogens in your lab?

Are there any hazards or safety risk at all in your work. And if so what and don’t you think the public should also be aware of what those risk are ?

What type of Lab is it classified as and who built it ?

Can you clarify what checks and controls Primary Industries conduct?

You have noted you “create” proteins at the Cawthorne can you expand on what create means ? Would this be seen in the public perception as bioengineering?

Are you aware of any military connections to biowarfare that your partners have?

Are you aware of any ethics issues your partners or associates have now or in the past.?

Why is Mr Oliver no longer a partner ?

You note your works not connected to the proposed gene bill. Is this because your not working with what the public perception of GMOs are? Or because technicality while your working with modified organism under the definition of NZ law they are not classified legally here in NZ as GMOs?

Can you clarify your relationship with the Department of Defence here in New Zealand and the USA.

I will be going to print mid week with my current findings. So if your able to respond by Tuesday morning at the latest that would be fantastic

Apparently despite the entire world having just being hit by the impact of careless work at laboratory (Wuhan Institute), messing around with SPIKE PROTEIN Kimer doesn’t believe people have a right to know more about their operations and we just have to take them at their word. And bear in mind we only know about the work taking place at the Wuhan Institute because some folks chose not to just believe the press releases given by public relation experts from pharmaceutical firms with conflicts of interest release to pet media, more interested in dollar than social responsibilities.

So what we do know is their own website notes they do use specialty-built labs constructed by companies who deal in labs used to house hazardous pathogens. Kiessig’s explanation, hitting out at those wanting to know more (always a good sign you’re operating above board), also omits a reality of military related research contracts.

Meaning outsourced military science can often have genuine legitimate civilian uses, or purposes. And the flip side is any defensive measures usally can also be applied offensively. Science projects contracted out to civilian sources are also routinely compartmentalised so a group of scientists can work on a single component, or application, with the best of intentions can have no real idea how their niche research can then be applied to a larger project with wider offensive military ramifications.

Another reality of biowarfare research is it big business and its a global business with a massive reach.

ALPHA VIRUS THE POOR MANS WMD

The Sunshine Project in the 1980s 1990s (until funding dried up) mapped more than 1300 laboratories engaged in Pentagon funded biowarfare research worldwide. Biowarfare is dreaded because it cheap and compared to nuclear science easy for poor nations and non-state actors.

On the rare occasion this research is mentioned in public, the biowarfare work was called “counter measures” as a means of circumnavigating international arms treaties on biowarfare. The line between biowarfare and bio defence is at best a blurry one.

The real issue the public needs to know is the Nelson research in any way involved in making existing diseases more virulent, or has the potential to make it resistant to antiviral treatment?

Kiessig says the Nelson lab worked in controlled conditions, monitored by the Ministry for Primary Industries. “Suggestions that ‘a leak from such a lab could be a catastrophe and could introduce either of these tropical diseases into NZ’ is misleading and unhelpful.”

This answer doesn’t actually address the actual claims and that the laboratory needs monitoring would seem to suggest the work be done is not without hazard.Even if the alleged claims are “exaggerated” as stated without actual elaboration of how or why that’s so.

“In fact”  Kiessig reported Kimer Med’s work focused on developing antiviral drugs for diseases including dengue fever and Zika. Zika is a disease spread by mosquitoes. So that part of the claims is true at the very least. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, 400 million people are infected with the mosquito-borne dengue virus each year and 21,000 deaths are attributed to the disease. Nearly 470 cases of West Nile virus, chikungunya, and dengue have been reported so far this year, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Time Magazine cited unclassified documents from the United States Army Chemical Corps in 1960 describing its chemical and biological warfare development using mosquitoes to carry bioagents, “In 1953, the Biological Warfare Laboratories in Fort Detrick established a program to study the use of arthropods for spreading anti-personnel BW agents.” The report cited the advantages of using insects: they inject pathogens directly into the body so wearing masks would not be protective, and “they will remain alive for some time, keeping an area constantly dangerous.” Such an attack would be difficult to detect, and even if discovered, the disease would have already broken out. This last point is significant in the context that increasingly wars are being fought economically from the shadows, using cybercrime, transitional crime or disruptive technologies. as opposed to using conventional forces that clearly identify opponents.

While several US congressional investigations currently (and in the past) have looked at past biological warfare research role as an accidental and or even deliberate spreader of vector-based diseases such as lymes a tick born virus as part of their covert research. For example, between April and November of 1956, the US Army Corps released uninfected female mosquitos in a residential area in Georgia. In the same period, a similar test was performed at the Avon Park Bombing Range in Florida. They learned mosquitos who had travelled only one to two miles and had bitten hundreds of people. And that with our rattling off a very loooooong list of accidental releases. A 2018 US military research project Insect Allies, has bio-engineers insects critics worried that duel use research will trigger a biowarfare arms race.

So what are Kimer defense connections and their US government corporate ties?

Well chief researcher is Sophie Walker, who specialises in protein biophysics held a postdoctoral position in the Computational Biophysics Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sophie then worked as a Senior Scientist in the National Radiation Lab, Institute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR) and was the lead scientist for “the New Zealand Defence Force in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive threats”. In addition she is a Qualified Expert with the UN for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons (UNSGM) A March 7, 2024 PRNewswire reported Kimer Med, had signed a NZD$1.3 million with Battelle. The contract was funded by the United States government through the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), and will fall into Battelle’s Accelerated Therapeutics for Combating Acute Viral Epidemics programme.

The contract is focused on the discovery and development of new antiviral drug candidates for the treatment of alphaviruses. Alpha viruses are spread mostly by infected ticks and mosquitoes, alphaviruses and can cause significant human and animal disease. Infections that result in encephalitis – inflammation and swelling of the brain – are often fatal and can cause ongoing neurological problems.

UNIVERSITY DEFENCE DOLLARS & DEAD SCIENTIST

Worryingly since New Zealand Universities have become involved in US defence related bio and GMO the number of New Zealand researchers, working in these areas, who have died in our right homicides or other freak accidents, matches the dramatic upwards curve of Pentagon dollars financing New Zealand science. To give that statement mathematical context in 2016 The Press reported “However, the chances of deadly, unprovoked attacks are rare, so rare that instances of murders by strangers number in single digits. New Zealand’s murder rate overall is, annually, in double figures”.

1999 UN mine-clearing expert from New Zealand accused of sabotaging Iraqi crops. Ian Broughton, a 30-year-old former non-commissioned officer with the New Zealand army’s engineering regiment, left Baghdad by road to Amman. Baghdad accused Broughton of burying locust eggs in an area close to the Iranian border on April 8 in a bid to ruin the country’s already drought-hit harvest Tehran Times.

So, what is one to think when you find three murder attempts, (two successful) in scientists all involved in biosecurity – all working in just one University and nearly twenty other deaths, in biosecurity related fields, with New Zealand? All surrounded in extremely unusual circumstances – the phase a ‘statistical blip’ doesn’t even begin to cover how these numbers are defying the expected statical norm. Coincidence doesn’t even cover these numbers. And that we can find at least one New Zealander a former army engineer and member of the New Zealand SAS involved in planting bioweapons using insects only adds to a high ly disturbing picture forming. To stress the point this reporter has worked on National Security issue for three decades. And to give a comparison in thirty years I have only heard of two NZSAS combat veterans as having been reported (in public sources) as having died both in training exercises. It’s obvious that such professionals are exposed to a considerably higher rate of risk than any academic even those working in biosecurity.

Body Count2024:

Auckland University entomologist Stephen Thorpe, who did biosecurity work for Landcare, is knifed to death. His 26-year-old assailant was apparently waiting for him outside the tennis club that was almost his second home. The assailant was a loner with no apparent income source whose late model car was valued at high five figures, envied by his flat mates who said he mostly kept to himself, and they were unsure what he did for a living. Thorpe had an eye “for seeing things instantly that shouldn’t be there” according to a friend. He has identified over a dozen invasive insects while out walking. Thorpe has identified more than 12 introduced insect species that posed biosecurity issues.

In January 2025 two vehicles stopped and singled out Kyle Whorrall an American scientist believed to be out looking for an unnamed insect species on the night he was singled out and attacked. Worhole was attacked by a 16-year-old believed to have gang affiliations. Police authorities continue to ask the public for help as they seek to identify a possible motive “some one out there knows something and we need to hear from them” and don’t seem convinced the attack was random.

At the time of writing I have forwarded my findings to the authorities. In January 2025 Dr Vinod Suresh, University of Auckland’s Department of Engineering Science and Auckland Bioengineering Institute, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after he and six people were  driven into a car in a seemingly deliberate hit and run where again the motive again remains a mystery.

Vinod Suresh graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai (formerly known as Madras). As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan ( where three academics, including an entomologist and an academic working on the source of Covid, have been murdered since 2020).Vinod skills are highly relevant to defense-related areas such as CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) defense, materials science, for protective equipment and military operations. Vinod Michigan work was affiliated with The Maurice Wilkins Centre – targeting serious Cancer and Immunology human disease ·

The New Zealand based Centre is also building strategic links with China in biomedical science, at the institute, region and state level, has partnerships with many universities including the University of Michigan, Yale, UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (UK), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands a NATO partner), Harvard and John Hopkins.

2019 Dr Muhammad Abdus Samad, 66 worked as a lecturer in Bangladesh’s Agricultural Development Corporation. He was among the victims in the Christchurch shooting that killed 51 people as they attended mosque services. Samad worked as a visiting professor at Lincoln University in Christchurch focusing on plants and crop health.

2019 Also killed at the Mosque tragedy Ansi Alibava, 23 who was doing a masters in management in Agribusiness at Lincol at Lincoln University,

2019 Mohammed Hamood lecture in Agriculture financing and investment. Several other mosque victims worked in IT and aviation with believed cross over into sensitive agricultural and scientific research.

15 people were killed in the plane crash in far north Queensland.

2005 Dr Banks is not New Zealander, and he did not die in New Zealand, but he is included due to the timing of his death and its context. Namely I would be specifically asked about his death by a senior government scientific advisor in relation to a spate of deaths including a 2003 plane crash of NZ scientists. Banks was one of 9 people who died when his plane crashed due to human error near Cape York. He was investigating a mystery disease which had broken out among birds near Ross River Queensland Banks was a specialist in disease and quarantine.

2005 Dr Skira Otago University pest eradication dies investigating birds dying of a mystery disease on Snares Island. The pest eradication expert is simply referred to in press reports as a wildlife specialist. His death was listed as heart failure due to infection of unknown origins

2004 Michelle McCormack New Zealand Marine Studies Centre raising the public’s awareness of the marine environment and conservation issues. In September 2003 she was tragically killed in a Dunedin Road accident. In 2004 I replayed a tape interview with the Dunedin Coroner’s office which he agreed confirmed two actual witnesses account of her hit and run. Both witnesses were not interviewed by the police until weeks after her death. Both witnesses stated the truck that hit her remained motionless as a full sequence of traffic lights changed and she was not, as later claimed talking on her phone as she crossed the street. They claim she was hit by the truck as the light went from orange to red.

2003, after I shared information with the Dunedin Pathologist office, Police investigated the death of a Dunedin scientist Dr Mark John Tunstall, 39, a neurophysiologist who I had brought to the pathologist attention, was found dead in his office. Police examined whether he was poisoned by his laboratory work in an investigation, absent of any technical knowledge of Tunstall or other academic work conducted at the University (Dunedin CIB didn’t bother to interview me to examine my own finings) with possible risk This included studies into a mystery disease plaguing marine animals and bioengineering proteins, affiliated with Invermay laboratories in Mosgiel, which targeted the heart and organs of possible invasive species.

The engineered pathogen was similar to research that accidentally killed a researcher in Geelong CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory in December 2001. It used small insects to infect vermin with a bioengineered protein to damage organs and heart trigger haemorrhaging. This resulted is causing mass blood loss and heart failure. The project was run with Monash University Australia, using Wallabies on Defence property.

Tunstall was included into a coroner examination that sought to see if family members wanted a deeper inquiry (after three other citizens died of symptoms mirroring Tunstall which included vomiting up blood). When I asked what led to the heart disease, the coroner stated possible lifestyle choices but would not elaborate. However, one established common denominator of four victims reportedly shared the same GP. Why Tunstall occupation was omitted from the report seen by the family was not explained.

2003 A plane crash claimed seven employees of a biotechnology institute in New Zealand that leads research into genetically modified organisms use. This craft again led to a very senior adviser asking specifically if I reason to suspect fold play. This adviser soon left New Zealand after expressing his concerns.

Four administrators and three staff members from the New Zealand Institute for Crop and Food Research, based in Christchurch affiliated with Lincoln University, were killed in the accident. Nicky Hager’s book Seeds of Distrust released in 2008 confirms the government was aware of illegal GMO experiments being conducted including those at at Lincoln

The bodies found in the wreckage were pilot Mr Bannerman, and Crop & Food Research managers Howard Bezar, aged 55, Margaret Viles, 53, Alistair Clough, 37, Richard Finch, 41, Desma Hogg, 42, Katherine Carman, 35, and Andrew Rosanowski, 37.Crop & Food managers Tim Lindley and Richard Barton survived but were seriously injured.

The Christchurch coroner ruled human error as the cause.

With that in mind there is an old saying ‘sometimes a cigar is just a cigar’. Which in this case means we’re not implying every one of the cited deceased scientists was a victim of a grand conspiracy. But in saying that the facts remain in several case scientists, especially entomologists, involved in biosecurity were targeted. And in at least one case a senior advisor sought me out specifically to say he was concerned at some of the lab work taking place. With the hindsight sight of Hager’s investigative work (which came after earlier stories I had printed on this) we can now confirm illegal and potentially hazardous scientific research was being conducted and as the senior source had inferred to me when expressing his concerns as we published at the time.

DEAD WARAFARE SCIENTISTS A GLOBAL OCCUPATION HAZARD.

And it took place at the very places where a hefty number of the deceased kiwi scientists were working. A quick Internet search shows post 911 the dead microbiologist plague was not confined to New Zealand the most famous of the hundred plus scientist who died in strange circumstances was Dr David Kelly a Porton down scientist who warned that the “orcs had been let out to play” before his “sucide”. And a spate of scientists killed, in similar manners, in the 80s and the 90s we now know were targeted due to Iran nuclear program.

A similar case of death surrounded UK scientists involved in sensitive radio and radar work at the peak of Cold War tensions in the 1980s. We have previously reported on the case of former New Zealand SAS solider Ian Broughton being expelled from Iraq after he was found trying to plant locust egg in Iraq crops. Other sources who served in the SAS in the 1970s confirm that not all of New Zealand role in counter bioterrorism (which we have a specialty in within special forces) has been defensive and they have continually urged me to investigate past university research they claim was defense funded. Owen Wilkes a legendary New Zealand anti warfare researcher, whose biography Peace Monger was published in 2020, has likewise mentioned such research in his 1973 book Protest.

The Clients of Kimer So caution is warranted and Kimer case they clearly do have clients who do work for the military industrial complex.

Today in post Rogernomics science many academic and even Green MPs support 1080 and even Brodifacoum (also considered by the US Army a bioweapon due to its ability to work its way into the food chain) while ignoring the reality of any scientist who dared critic their use was soon unemployed. In 2017 Smith advised activist incorrectly targeted for using 1080 in threat not to sue. The actual poisoner was a scientist tied up in making rival pesticide poisons.

In future issues will delve into some of the Cawthorne more contentious and controversial affiliated projects. It suffices to say the Cawthorne has filled many of the gaps which occurred when under Rogernomics NZ. Rogernomics stopped fully funding science, and academia was encouraged to embrace private partnership models.

Gluckman sat on John Key’s informal ‘Free Thinkers’ panel which considered emerging threats. Occurring prior to Key own appointment on several US Defence related cyber security firms. The acceptance of defence funded science represents a new face of post Rogernomics science.

One happy to see New Zealand science be weaponized as also pursued by Labour Science Minister Peter Hodgeson in the early 2000s who approved bio-mapping by a client associated with Chinas secret police.

While the role of Maryland military industrial complex in bioengineering exploded following the 2001 attack in New York. This when Anthrax attacks helped post 9/11 build a case for war in Iraq. The attack were later shown to come from Fort Detricks Maryland the home of biowarfare research for the US Army.Maryland was where America Covid subject zero  was a US soldier, who had returned from serving at a US base outside the USA (according to local papers), but in July Maryland was also hit earlier by a mystery virus, mirroring Covid symptoms. The mystery disease hit several retirement homes including Greensprings.

The homes all cared for former military veterans or relatives of veterans. Coinciding with outbreaks of black mold, secondary symptoms of Covid outbreaks, at several US bases in the Maryland belt. At the time the US military was known to be helping create multiple vaccines for disease out breaks in Africa while working with Merk pharmacy. The large batch consignments stretched usual safety protocols. This was due to the pharmaceutical company having to play catch up after 2017 cyber jack disrupted its production line causing over a billion in damages.

The Green Spring case was later included into Covid numbers despite initial insistence the retirement home outbreaks, never identified, were not Covid. Other cases of Covid would be found in NATO countries prior to the Wuhan outbreak. Leaving the dilemma for researchers, hampered by a lack of samples not provided by Chinese authorities tracking its origins.

BAT CRAZY

Currently there are now two theories on Covid origins One is the Peter Daszak Bat theory, which was also offered as the source of 2014 Ebola (one of the vaccines being worked on in Virginia) by Eco Health Alliance. The company did the original pathogen tracking until they were fired by the World Health Organisation for incompetence. In the 2014 outbreak two variants emerged when the disease broke out in three nations Sierra Leone, the Congo and lIBERIA  In all three case the US Department of Defence was providing research for antiviral research according to Harvard University Francis Professor Boyle a specialist on biowarfare legislation. When I interviewed Boyle in 2014 he highlighted the flaws in the Ebola bat theory.

Much of Boyle, who passed away this year, work has now been used by American and Australian intelligence service whose specialist analyst largely favour Wuhan Institute as the likely probable ground zero for the Covid outbreak.

Without China providing a more detailed sample the Boyle thesis is not a 100 percent certainty. That said it’s an infinitely stronger theory than Daszak bat theory. And if we apply Occam’s Razor ( when confronted with two possible ideas the less complicated version usually the more probable) Wuhan Institute the clear winner.

THE RABBIT CALCI FIASCO

The fact is New Zealand not without bio security scandals.

The biggest was the 1997  New Zealand Calci virus outbreak this follows a deliberate release of disease after a 1996 review board approving release was rejected after an intervention by world Calici expert Dr Alvin Smith.

The review board, which had no virologists included US biowarfare scientist Dr Robert Shope Colonel Donald Burke and the Ministry Health. The Ministry of health Zoonotic expert at the time was Alexander Kouzminov a Russia defector and author of the book Biological Espionage. Kouzminov book claims governments routinely released pathogen on the public as part of their proxy wars with rivals. Currently a strategic planning for Waikato Council he was let off 2014 drink driving charges due to his ” valuable” work for Western intelligence agencies according to the New Zealand Herald.

The Detroit Medical journal notes Otago farmers were contacted by a Ministry of Foreign Affairs employee, later suspended.

The subsequent Rabbit Calci Fiasco report was later shelved by Massey University academia funded by pharmaceutical companies and never actually reviewed by a government minister. Likewise no gene sequence was ever done to assess the origins of the virus as the local press simply accepted the incredulous tale it was taken off road kill in Australia.

Let’s not be paranoid but let’s also accept that walking up to those with zero economic interest in coming clean on potential risk and accepting their assurances at face value, based on simply say so, is a little naive.

The very reason billions is being spent on countering biowarfare threats, that can create billions in damage while leaving factories intact, is because on the other side of the coin. Billions are being spent on developing such terrifying weapons.  Disruptive technology is the spare head of modern warfare where the goal is more economic rather than directly destructive as is the goal in conventional warfare.

In this age of information and economic warfare there are both state actors and non state actors keen to develop cheap devastating disruptive technology.

And the reality is it is easy to take the position of the former cold war nuclear posturing that nuclear arsenal prevent nuclear war. Except the lesson of the cold war is such logic created an arms race that nearly brought us to the brink of Armageddon and the biowarfare counter threat ‘arms race’ may do exactly the same thing even with the best of intentions.

My questions to Kimer Lab in preparation of Shipping News August 48 as published this Tuesday when we get a response will update accordingly.

Morning my name is Ben Vidgen

I’m a journalist and I am wondering if you might be able to clarify a few facts about your work at the Cawthorne Institute?

Namely

  1. Are you working with actual Zika and Dengue pathogens in your lab?
  2. Are there any hazards or safety risk at all in your work. And if so what and don’t you think the public should also be aware of what those risk are ?
  3. What type of Lab is it classified as and who built it ?
  4. Can you clarify what checks and controls Primary Industries conduct?
  5. You have noted you “create” proteins at the Cawthorne can you expand on what create means ? Would this be seen in the public perception as bioengineering?
  6. Are you aware of any military connections to biowarfare that your partners have?
  7. Are you aware of any ethics issues your partners or associates have now or in the past.?
  8. Why is Mr Oliver no longer a partner ?
  9. You note your works not connected to the proposed gene bill. Is this because your not working with what the public perception of GMOs are? Or because technicality while your working with modified organism under the definition of NZ law they are not classified legally here in NZ as GMOs?
  10. Can you clarify your relationship with the Department of Defence here in New Zealand and the USA.

I will be going to print mid week with my current findings. So if your able to respond by Tuesday morning at the latest that would be fantastic
